John Retires!

John McKenzie
retired as Lettings Officer for the Centre on Friday 27th May after
5 years in a variety of posts. He joined us originally using his joinery skills
making cupboards and generally fitting out rooms as we developed. Like so many
others he was drawn in to other areas serving as caretaker and lettings
officer.
In spite of
painful problems while awaiting hip replacement operations John was unfailingly
cheerful and never failed to do his best to assist all our users. He will be
much missed although will be returning to us when he can to help out in a
voluntary capacity. We wish him all the best with his forthcoming operations
and hopes for a speedy recovery.
Presentations were
made to John by the JMC and others at a lunch on Friday.

Ministerial visit to the Parade!

Thanks to Ester
McVey MP for arranging for Nick Hurd, Minister with special responsibility for
the Big Society to visit the Centre this week. He attended a packed meeting
with representatives of many local organisations answering questions on all
aspects of this policy initiative to bring more power to local people.
He took time to
explore the Centre with the Chairman of the JMC Vaughan Williams and was keen
to hear how the Asset Transfer was progressing transferring the Parade to our
new company.
Vaughan said “ It
was great to have this opportunity to brief the Minister on the impact this sort
of big undertaking has had on our volunteers and how the elected members have
supported us. He was interested to hear how the local Authority had handled the
transfer of one of the largest Centres in the area. He was really impressed by
what has been achieved by volunteers to create this great facility for local
people”

Asset Transfer moves forward!
At a meeting on
13th January the Cabinet of Wirral Borough Council agreed to accept the
business plan put forward by the Joint Management Committee of the Hoylake
Community Centre. This transfers the site and its assets for management under a
99 year lease to a new charitable company to be known as Hoylake Parade Ltd.
This company will be set up to run the Centre for the benefit of the local
community as before. The transformation into a company is necessary because the
payment of utility costs and the few non-volunteer staff is now the
responsibility of the Centre.
The transfer provides for funding to allow the full refurbishment of
the roofs, replacement of all windows, new drains and car park. These works
will be completed in 2011/2012 and our aim is to have a building which will
serve local people for the next century as it has for the previous one.
This is the culmination of over 20 years work by a group of dedicated
volunteers who were not prepared to see this great building demolished and the
site sold for housing. Over £1.3m to date has been spent on creating this
wonderful facility for the local community.
The range of activities at the Centre is considerable and constantly
expanding as you will see on the Activities and Events pages. Please use YOUR
Centre- if you have not visited recently come in and see what you have on your
doorstep!
